TURKEY DECOY - RIFLE REST HANDLE (MODIFICATION)
Turkey Hunting Decoy Rifle Rest Modification
A coworker (an avid turkey hunter) asked for help modifying his decoy setup for better safety during hunts. Here's the full story and solution:
The Problem
Turkey decoys work great for drawing birds in close, but mature gobblers can get aggressive fast once they're nearby. Normally, he'd hold the full-body decoy with one hand to keep it realistic, then have to quickly drop it, grab his rifle, and shoot—all in a very short window. That left him vulnerable and rushed.
The Solution
We modified his existing decoy stake/handle to create a stable “rifle rest” while still holding the decoy.
Here's what we did:
Reverse engineered the main vertical handle that the turkey decoy parts attach to.
Fabricated a custom “Y-shaped” bracket (see 3D model below) that connects to the decoy component parts.
You’ll need to cut a small opening in the decoy's flared tail feathers so the rifle barrel can rest through it.
The Y-fork now acts as a steady rest for the barrel.
This simple change allows:
Ability to hold the decoy naturally with one hand
Rest and balance his rifle barrel in the Y with the other hand
Stay ready on the trigger without dropping the decoy
Much safer and more controlled—especially when a bird is coming in hot.
The 3D printed bracket is lightweight, durable, and designed to work with his standard decoy system (like the one shown in the parts photo).
If you're a turkey hunter looking for a practical field hack, this one’s a game-changer for safety and shot readiness. Let me know if you want the design files or more details! 🦃
